激進組織「伊斯蘭國」（Islamic State，IS）1日公布一段影片，宣稱是昨天（10/31）俄羅斯客機在埃及墜毀前的最後畫面，造成機上224人罹難，不過，畫面中可以見到俄國客機冒出黑煙後墜落，但看不出有任何飛彈攻擊客機的證明。而俄羅斯交通部長和埃及外交部長舒克里（Sameh Shukri）都認為，IS擊落客機的消息並不正確。

之前有媒體報導指出，埃及西奈的武裝恐怖分子取得俄國製的肩射式防空飛彈，但這種飛彈只能對付低空的飛機，而失事的俄國民航機在失聯前的飛行高度是31000英呎，埃及官員認為，IS沒有擊落這架民航機的能力。不過，去年1月，埃及武裝份子曾擊落一架空軍直升機。

但法國航空公司與德國漢莎航空宣布，為了安全起見，暫時避飛西奈半島上空，舒克里並希望「外國不要揣測空難原因並採對應措施」，因為「會衝擊埃及經濟，帶來傷害」。俄國官員則已進入經營失事班機的Metrojet與Brisco公司辦公室搜查文件並偵訊相關人員。

埃及與俄羅斯都否認這起空難與恐怖組織IS有牽連。伊斯蘭國則宣稱此舉是為了報復俄國最近在敘利亞的空襲行動。

這是空中巴士（Airbus）客機10年來傷亡最慘重的空難。
